I Let AI Plan My Entire Trip — Here’s What Happened
As a chronic over-planner, I handed my credit card and full control to Shasa, the NxVoy AI Assistant. Was it a disaster, or a revelation?
As an over-thinker and a control freak, travel planning usually takes me weeks. I use color-coded spreadsheets. I read 1-star reviews of 5-star hotels just to "know the risks." So when the NxVoy team challenged me to hand my credit card over to their AI assistant, Shasa, and let her plan a 4-day trip from scratch, I was terrified.
The Rules of the Experiment:
- 1I give the AI a $1,500 budget and exact dates.
- 2I cannot open Google Maps.
- 3I must do whatever the AI itinerary tells me to do.
The Setup: Trusting the Machine
I opened the NxVoy app and gave Shasa my literal prompt:
"I have a 4-day weekend in late October. My budget is $1,500 total. I am flying out of Chicago. I am stressed from work. I want amazing, heavy food, beautiful architecture, and zero stress. Build my trip."
Time elapsed to get a full itinerary: 42 seconds.
Shasa didn't send me to a beach to relax. She mathematically determined that flights to Montreal were exceptionally cheap that weekend ($280 round trip), securing me a luxurious $180/night loft in Old Montreal, leaving $500 for heavy, incredible French-Canadian food.
It was brilliant. But would it work on the ground?
Day 1 & 2: The Perfect Flow
The biggest thing I noticed immediately was the logistical flow. When I plan trips manually, I always underestimate transit times. Shasa mapped my days in tight, walkable circles.
On Friday morning, I grabbed a coffee and walked to the Notre-Dame Basilica (tickets were pre-booked by the AI). After the tour, the AI had scheduled a classic Montreal smoked meat sandwich lunch exactly a 6-minute walk away. I didn't have to pull out my phone and search "food near me." The decision fatigue was completely gone.
Day 3: The AI Reroutes a Disaster
Here is where I was ready to declare the experiment a failure, but the AI saved it. A massive rainstorm rolled in just before my 2-hour outdoor walking tour of Mount Royal.
Push Notification Received:
"Storm alert detected. Your Mount Royal tour is likely to be unpleasant. Would you like me to cancel the tour (fully refundable) and book you a spot at the Bota Bota spa? There are 3 spots left for this afternoon."
I hit "Yes." In 30 seconds, it canceled the bad idea, booked the rainy-day spa, and hailed an Uber. It was incredible.
The Final Verdict
What Went Wrong?
Almost nothing. One dinner spot closed its kitchen 30 minutes early due to a private event. I pinged Shasa in the chat, and she instantly found a late-night pasta spot two blocks away.
The Financials
Budget: $1,500
Total Spent: $1,412. The AI actually came in under budget, proving its optimization algorithms aren't just marketing.
Would I Do It Again?
I will never plan a trip manually again. The time I saved not reading 40 hotel reviews paid for the trip in mental clarity alone. If you want to stop planning and start traveling, you have to try it.
